Biological risks are a major global problem in the workplace and the COVID-19 pandemic has only highlighted the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the biological risks at work. In 2022, over 550,000 deaths were caused by biological risk factors. 476,000 deaths are attributed to communicable infectious diseases and 74,000 deaths were caused by noncommunicable agents according to a new study that presents global data on both factors leading to death and disability for the year 2021.

The article, Global Estimates on Biological Risks at Work, is co-authored by Jukka Takala, former EU-OSHA Executive Director, and has been published in Safety and Health at Work (SH@W) and is available in Science Direct.
