Exposure to biological agents and related health problems for healthcare workers
Keywords:As part of a major project intended to increase knowledge about biological agents in the workplace, EU‑OSHA investigated the risks posed to workers in the healthcare sector by exposure to these agents. The picture presented in this discussion paper was built up through desk research and data collection, as well as interviews and focus groups with experts and healthcare workers.
The discussion paper highlights the types of exposure, health effects, exposure routes and emerging risks that are relevant to the sector. It considers groups of workers that are at particular risk and asks what policy measures might help in moving towards a more systematic approach to risk management.
